Built your own website but need more from it now?
Transition to a professionally programmed website that will give you more flexibility, additional functionality and search engine optimisation ability.
Do it yourself websites are a good way to get a web presence and not break the budget but as your business grows, so does the need for better flexibility and functionality for your website that a DIY website might not provide.
Arguably, the big issue with sites built with DIY software is the lack of control over search engine optimisation. This aspect of a web presence is so essentially important in giving your business maximum reach online. Yes, you can have great content, yes you can write regular blog posts – all good for search engine optimisation, but there is more you can be doing to optimise your website and improve your Google ranking that DIY websites do not allow.
If you are finding limitations with usability of your DIY website, then it is time to upgrade.
So, what should you upgrade to? Stream Design recommend the WordPress platform as a good transition from a DIY website. WordPress software runs 26% of the web to-date, and it’s easy to see why – WordPress sites are user friendly and allows you to make easy changes to your website as well as having the flexibility and functionality you need to take your website to the next professional level. There are many WordPress plugins at your fingertips that can just about do whatever you need for your new professional website.
There are two important WordPress plugins which I will briefly cover here, WooCommerce and Yoast.
WooCommerce is an ecommerce platform for WordPress that boasts ‘the world’s most customizable eCommerce platform’. It is ‘open source’ meaning your programmer can customise WooCommerce plugin to do what you want, giving you ultimate control over the functionality, look and feel of your online shop. It integrates well with other WordPress plugins. WooCommerce integration is worth investigating if you are selling your product online.
Yoast is a search engine optimisation WordPress plugin for your website. It allows you to input specific page descriptions, meta tags and more to get your website moving up the ranks of a google search. It is super easy to install and use, but – it is important to have quality content to add to these areas of your site. You can write it yourself and hope for the best or employ a copywriter or SEO specialist to do this for you.
